Bewley's row heads to court
Jim McGrath

ONE of the most bitter rows in Dublin's business circles for many years is set to come to a head this week as the players in the Grafton Street Bewley's Café battle are due to lock horns in court.

The case between the café landlord, Ickendel Ltd, and the Campbell Bewley Group (CBG) is due for hearing this Tuesday in the commercial court before Justice Frank Clarke unless the litigants settle prior to the 10am scheduled start of the case.

The row originated after Ickendel failed in its attempt to stop Bewley's from carrying out work on the premises.

It is now alleging CBG is in breach of its obligations under the lease on its Grafton Street premises from where two restaurants are currently being run, Café Bar Deli and Mackerel.

Ickendel Ltd is a company jointly owned by Johnny Ronan of Treasury Holdings, which is looking to have CBG forfeit the lease on the premises.

Ickendel is alleging CBG had promised to "aggressively" defend its case, although both sides did agree to some mediation prior to the court date.

Despite this the Sunday Tribune understands that tensions between the two groups remains high.

Ickendel had previously offered Euro6m to CBG to forfeit the lease.

The coffee house first opened in 1927 and became a part of the fabric of the capital city's cultural life, renowned as a meeting place for the great and good, poets, writers and leaders alike.
