We all know that a warm, dazzling smile has always been the spark that ignites that all important relationship.
In fact, according to recent research carried out in Britain by the Academy of General Dentistry, as many as ninety-six per cent of people regard a smile as 'very important to someone's overall appearance.' Even our history books tell us that centuries ago, servants were hired on the strength of their teeth because healthy teeth were a sign of vitality and good, strong bones.
So it's fair to say that an unattractive smile displaying gaping holes, uneven or stained teeth can probably restrict a person's chances of career success, and badly damage their self esteem.
That makes sense when you consider that the very things we flash to the opposite sex at moments of flirtation; things that define the contours of our mouth and are supposed to accentuate our faces can sometimes be the very things that let us down. After all, donning a designer suit and sporting a fabulous hairdo is pointless if our teeth are dangling from our gums like yellow tombstones.
However, if you are one of those people who yearn for a glowing set of gnashers to rival that of even the most luscious Hollywood 'A' lister's posing pout, then now is the time to put your money where your mouth is and get set to whiten, brighten and straighten.
Scientists are constantly discovering new techniques to perfect the beautiful smile. They have come a long way as a result of extensive research and better products, making elective cosmetic dentistry more attainable and more affordable than ever.
As a result cosmetic dentistry in Ireland has become something of an art form, in fact, such is the demand that many practices now offer a same-day service for certain procedures, and everyone, whatever their age, can have a natural, youthful, beautiful smile that oozes confidence and vitality. And, for those of us who've hit midlife crises mode and yearn for that dinky sports convertible; believing it will enhance our appearance and double our chances with the opposite sex, think again; a perfectly aligned set of pearly whites is probably more cost effective in the long term, especially if you take a short trip up North.
As human beings, we have an unquenchable thirst to be liked and appreciated; we know that a pleasant appearance can work wonders and make us more popular.
Dr Colin Howell is a man who understands that need.
