WEARY Dublin commuters will have to wait just a little bit longer for 'real time' electronic timetables to tell them precisely how much longer they must wait for the next bus.
While Dublin Bus has already tendered for an Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) system for its Dublin network, similar to the system that operates on the Dart, a spokeswoman said last week it will be "a number of years" before it is up and running.
Under the high-tech system, the location of every bus will be fed into a central control unit.
This unit will then relay the unfolding information to every bus stop equipped with the electronic timetables.
In the meantime, commuters will have to make do with new 'vandal-proof ', softedged bus stops and shelters.
Last week the semi-state tendered for more commuterfriendly bus stops as part of its overall review of on-street customer information. These will include "stop-specific timetables" and maps on the stops which will also have to be "reusable and recyclable" .
The new stops will also have to be suitable for solar electric illumination.
