ONE out of every five mobile handsets will be capable of receiving TV signals in three years as demand for mobile TV services hots up, according to Dublin-based consumer electronics firm S3.
Speaking from the company's stand last week on the floor of the 3GSM mobile technology conference in Barcelona, John Maguire, the head of S3's consumer mobile business, said that the biggest opportunities for mobile TV will come as so-called Tablet devices with mobile chipsets become more mainstream.
While 3GSM was seized with conflicts over mobile standards like 3G and WiMax or different brands of mobile digital TV transmission, S3 is in the fortunate position of selling software that will work no matter who wins this year's standards wars.
The company, which employs more than 300 people in Leopardstown, displayed its onHand technology to some of the thousands of delegates to the mobile technology fiesta. RD
