HOT SHOTS

TO DINE FOR describes itself as a fast and objective guide to eating out in Dublin.

It's certainly comprehensive, with 827 menus available and over 100,000 users who aren't afraid to speak their minds. The site also allows you to book tables online and, whether or not you choose to rely on the guidance of other ordinary punters, it gives a good indication of the restaurants creating the most buzz at the moment.

GET IT THIS WEEK. . .

An insanely cute watering can from Marks & Spencer (Euro11). Spring has indeed sprung

REEL LIFE If you'd like to get a flavour of who the next movers and shakers in digital art might be, get yourself down to Temple Bar's Meeting House Square, where work from the students, graduates and staff of the National College of Art and Design's MA Art in the Digital World is being showcased.

A definite highlight is Anne Maree Barry's 'Covered Road', which tells the story of a journey that was taken on stolen bicycles in rural Ireland in the '50s.

Barry, who works as an artist and filmmaker, was the winner of Best Irish Short at the 2006 Darklight Film Festival. See it and others on 21-25 February from 6pm to 10pm with a 7pm start on Saturday.

DIG DEEP When the Tsunami struck in 2005, a group of friends in Clane organised a fashion event to raise money for Goal.

The event, where all the clothes were new or as new, featured big labels at reduced prices. It was a phenomenal success, raising Euro20,000.

On 3-4 March, the Designer Dig returns to Barberstown Castle with all proceeds gong to the Marie Keating foundation and local primary schools in Clane. The team are looking for your unwanted designer clothes, shoes, bags and jewellery so if you have anything to donate email designerdig@eircom. net, or call 087 6998066 and definitely put those dates into your diary.

RAISING THE BAR In its quest to determine Dublin's top 100 bars, The Dubliner ranked Sin A on Ormond Quay in its top-10 list of finest boozers. It's a respectable rating by anyone's reckoning but regular patrons of the pub would argue that no other place, including the selected number one - Nearys - can rival Sin A for either the craic or the ceol.

Although only open for three years, it's firmly established itself as a much-loved Dublin institution, a refreshing, somewhat grungy antidote to the current crop of chichi but bland bars.

Scores points for late opening, Wednesday to Saturday, free finger food, an impressive selection of European beer, fresh OJ and a hearty and wholesome menu with meat from the owner's farm.

Best of all, it's on the northside, an area sadly lacking in quality drinking dens.

HEY JO Jo Pratt's credentials as a food writer are solid - she's writes regularly for Olive and Good Food magazines, as well as being contributing food editor for Elle. Her latest book, In the Mood for Food (Michael Joseph), taps into the way many of us eat now, which is dependent on what we feel like, rather than what's in the fridge.

There's a chapter for when you hardly have the energy to make a Pot Noodle;

one when you're feeling amorous;

another when you want to be super healthy;

and another suggests dishes for wowing guests at dinner parties.

A supremely useful and inspirational book to keep on your kitchen shelves.

CHILD'S PLAY Children's cultural centre the Ark has just launched the most amazing season of events for children aged three to 14.

Highlights include a Sharon Shannon concert with dancer Colin Dunne on St Patrick's Day and Read All Over, a daylong event of readings for children by well-known authors on 12 May.

But they're just two in a long list of many great things that will keep your little angels stimulated and out of trouble. Visit www. ark . ie or call 01 6707788 for the full programme.

FOLLOW THE PATTERN Don't miss the exhibition by John Laurence Speight at the Conway Mill, Falls Road, Belfast, which ends on Friday 2 March. A graduate of the University of Ulster, his work centres on the manipulation of traditional patterns and questions whether such a thing as good or bad taste can exist - and it's an absolute joy to look at.
