Baiba: family fury as killer's trail gets colder
Sarah McInerney and Mick McCaffrey

THE family of murdered Latvian woman Baiba Saulite has expressed deep frustration with the investigation into her death and believe that gardaA- are "powerless" to arrest her killer.

Speaking to the Sunday Tribune, Baiba Saulite's brother Karlis said that the family had been devastated by the lack of progress in solving the clinical assassination which took place at her Swords, Dublin home three months ago.

"If this crime had happened in Latvia, I believe it would have been solved by now, " he said. "Recently, I read about the court system in Ireland. I learned what is the position of the gardaA- and what is the position of the accused. And I realised how it is three times easier to get the job done in Latvia. We are a democratic country also. We are members of the European Union. But we have three times more order here."

In an exclusive interview, Saulite said that the Irish legal system had left gardaA- helpless to arrest the killer who shot the young mother dead as she chatted with friends on her doorstep.

"To think that you live in a democracy that gives more rights to criminals - it gives me pain just to think about it, " he said. "I just have a feeling that the Irish Garda are powerless."

Saulite met with gardaA- when he visited Ireland two weeks ago. "What we were told, we could have read about on the internet. We don't know if there are any prime suspects. We really don't know if the crime will ever be solved, " he said.

Saulite also visited Baiba's two young children, Ali (5) and Mohamed (3) who are in foster care. The Saulite family are hoping to get custody of the children while their father Hassan Hassan is in prison.

"We went to visit Hassan [in prison], " said Saulite. "We wanted to talk about the children, and I asked him if we could take them to Latvia until he is free. He told us he wouldn't like it."

GardaA- say they are making good progress and are confident of bringing charges in the case. A team of up to 50 officers is still investigating the murder and detectives have built up a detailed picture of who had Baiba Saulite (28) killed and why.

A man who was known to the mother-of-two organised her execution over a longstanding personal dispute.

They believe he contracted an underworld contact who is a senior member of the notorious McCarthyDundon gang based in Limerick. The Limerick criminal then arranged for a Finglas gang led by murdered drug dealer Martin 'Marlo' Hyland to carry out the assassination.

It is not definitively known who pulled the trigger, but gardaA- have a number of strong suspects. Among them are two Dublin men who are thought to have been responsible for the murders of Martin Hyland and innocent 20-year-old plumber Anthony Campbell last December.
