GAELIC GAMES PREVIEWS

ALL IRELAND CLUB SFC SEMI-FINALS DR CROKES (Kerry) v MOOREFIELD (Kildare) Gaelic Grounds, 2.15 Referee B Tyrell (Tipperary) Live, TG4, 2.00 They say Kerry and Kildare invented football as we know it when the two clashed in the '20s. Today the champions of both could show just why. It has all the potential to be a brilliant game of football. Crokes have Gooch and Brosnan.

Moorefield, while not having names of that stature, have a team that can thrill. In the Leinster final against Rhode they showed that, winning two penalties and scoring one goal in an end-to-end move. All came about because of quick ball into open spaces. They've some fine footballers too. Ronan Sweeney is one of the few top county footballers in Kildare while Daryl Flynn and Ross Glavin are being talked of as the club's present and the county's future.

But to win they must hold Gooch and slow Brosnan. This is the right time of year for them to do that.

Expect a shoot out and. . .

Verdict Moorefield by one

CROSSMAGLEN RANGERS (Armagh) v ST BRIGID'S (Roscommon) Mullingar, 2.15 Referee E Murtagh (Longford) So lads, how was your Christmas? A little late in asking, you say, but there is a relevance. You see, the festive period always has a huge effect on who will take one more step in the club championship. Some will have sat back, happy with their year's work, while others will have refused to sit for fear of growing lazy. We've known for some time which category Crossmaglen fall into.

Rumour has it they cancelled the whole holiday season this time around and instead watched the club football team run laps, lift weights, swim oceans. Brigid's?

We've all heard the stories/tall tales.

First things first, the Armagh champions will win. Even if they have come through a gruelling campaign. Even if Francie Bellew and Paul Kernan have knocks. Even if they've been here so many times before they should have lost interest. But they like doing things the hard way and that's why they'll relish another struggle. They'll grind this out by a few points, mainly thanks to OisA-n McConville stabbing over five or six frees.

Brigid's manager Anthony Cunningham said earlier in the week he believed his side's pace could trouble Cross and he's right. It will for a while. His team have the greater flair and the greater potential to run up big scores. But so have many teams Cross have faced and they've tortured them all into submission. For their 11 county titles, they'll want one more All Ireland in the Armagh village. They won't let that get away today.

Verdict Crossmaglen Rangers by three

ALLIANZ NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1A FERMANAGH v LIMERICK Clones, 2.00 RefereeM Duffy (Sligo) It's simple really - as spirited as both these teams were last week, and as shocking as Cork are, whoever loses this plays in Division Three next year.

Both sides have a lot in common.

They both have excellent full-back lines (now that Barry Owens is no longer underrated, Johnny McCarthy has to be the most undervalued full-back in football), attacking half-back lines, an exceptional midfielder each, but unfortunately, limited firepower upfront with hardly a two-footed forward in sight. Whoever gets to 11 scores first, wins. The hunch here is it will be Fermanagh, barely.

Verdict Fermanagh
