Whether you want to work in newspapers, TV or radio, in a busy hospital, or in the quieter environs of heritage sites or the library service, there is a course at Dun Laoghaire College of Further Education for you.
DFCE offers an interesting range of courses including sound engineering, nursing studies, media studies and journalism, arts and humanities, and design and technology. Its courses are certified by FETAC (Further Education & Training Awards Council) and the relevant Professional Bodies.
Through the Higher Education Links Scheme students on several FETAC Level 5 DCFE courses can continue their studies to degree level in DCU, UCD, NUI Maynooth, DIT, NUI Galway, Southampton University and Glamorgan University. These include the Diploma in Sound Engineering, Certificate in Nursing Studies and Certificate in Arts, Culture and History.
This Sound Engineering course is designed to provide a combination of practical and theoretical tuition in all aspects of digital sound engineering and event production. Students will gain experience in the operation of a fully equipped digital studio and the production of live performance recording.
Indeed DCFE set up its own record label, DCFE Records in 2005, giving students the opportunity to experience sound recording, organising photo shoots, promotional gigs, in store performances and album launches.
While the certificate course prepares students for direct entry into the sound engineering industry, successful students can continue their studies at DCFE for a second year to earn the diploma and then continue to degree level in Glamorgan University.
The Nursing Studies course is designed to give students a well-rounded introduction to the healthcare system. Students study core areas of nursing, and are given the opportunity to put theory into practice through their participation in work experience throughout the year. Graduates may proceed to Third Level colleges to study Nursing, Social Care or Health Sciences, or they can advance to degree level in Southampton University.
The Certificate in Arts, Culture and History is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of archaeology, local history and folklore, allowing them to develop professional skills in research, writing, organisation and communications. An attractive subject mix includes Archaeology, Folklore, Local History Studies, European Studies, Writing Skills for Journalism, Photography and Communications. Graduates are eligible for careers in Heritage, Tourism and the Library Services, or they can progress to a degree course in NUI.
