Giles fury over film about his Leeds days
Conor McMorrow

THE duo behind Oscar-nominated movie The Queen are working on a film based on a controversial book which has enraged Irish soccer legend Johnny Giles.

Stephen Frears and Peter Morgan have confirmed that they are working on an adaptation of David Peace's book The Damned Utd. The novel, written from the persective of manager Brian Clough, charts the story of his 44 days in charge of English football club, Leeds United.

Speaking to the Sunday Tribune, Giles, a former Leeds player who is also a character in the novel, said:
"The author of this book said that it is a fictitious novel based on fact.

How can you do that with a book?

"Anytime I am mentioned in the book I am having conversations with Brian Clough that never happened. I don't know about the movie but I am not portrayed the way I should have been in the book.

"It is a bit of a cheek to use someone's name and say that they were involved in conversations that never happened in a book. The movie has to happen yet and I can only comment on the book and all I can say is that I am not happy about it all."

Frears has been nominated for a Best Director award at tonight's Oscars ceremony in Hollywood for The Queen. Michael Sheen, who played Tony Blair in that film, has been chosen to play the role of Clough in Frears's latest project.
