Italian president asks Prodi to remain in office



ITALIAN PM Romano Prodi has been asked by the president to remain in office after resigning last week when he lost a key vote over troops in Afghanistan.

President Giorgio Napolitano said Prodi should stay on and dismissed former PM Silvio Berlusconi's demands for fresh elections as pointless.
