ANDREW THORNTON made a fairytale return to the saddle with victory on Simon in the Racing Post Chase yesterday. The veteran jockey was having his first ride back since suffering a leg injury three weeks ago.
Simon (11-2) went on from long-time leader Lucifer Bleu at the second last and went on to win by 10 lengths from Cornish Sett (25-1). Lacdoudal (8-1) was a further half-length away. Thornton had to give his mount a couple of reminders as the field set out on the second circuit but when it came to the business end, John Spearing's charge proved admirable.
Thornton tried to go between Lucifer Bleu and Limerick Boy at the third last but the gap was closed. However, Simon was still going best as stamina came into play and he stayed on dourly to give his owner-breeder, former trainer Mercy Rimell, a famous triumph.
Meanwhile, it was mission accomplished for Shatabdi as she multiplied her breeding value with an easy victory in the Grade Two Anglo Irish Bank Novices' Hurdle.
Impressive on her British debut at Plumpton, she fell at Ascot last time but was still easy in the market at 9-2.
Paul Nicholls had reported there was little to choose between his two runners in the racingpost. co. uk Pendil Novices' Chase and so it proved as Natal just outlasted Good Spirit in a stirring battle. Good Spirit seemed to be travelling more easily with three to jump as the pair moved clear of Ursis, but Natal applied himself bravely under Ruby Walsh.
