Adams hints at multi-billion peace payout for NI
Kevin Rafter Political Editor

NEGOTIATIONS to agree a multi-billion euro peace dividend for Northern Ireland will take place after this week's Stormont assembly elections, Sinn Fin president Gerry Adams said last night.

Adams said he believed the British and Irish governments would fund "a substantial peace dividend" for cross-border transport and health projects. "We expect to meet with the British Chancellor and the Taoiseach and Minister of Finance in the coming weeks to pursue this matter."

A senior Irish government source last night said "serious money, more than Euro1bn" would be available if a stable administration was formed in Northern Ireland involving unionist and nationalist parties.

In his leader's address to Sinn Fin delegates at the RDS last night, Adams warned that if the Democratic Unionist Party did not agree to enter a new multiparty government at Stormont the political process will continue without their involvement, saying: "Republicans have been enormously patient with the DUP, because we want them to be part of the process of creating a better future for all of our people. If the DUP refuses to join with the rest of us in the political process then the process will move on without them. They have no veto. They cannot stop the process of change."

Adams said Sinn Fin was ready for political power in both jurisdictions. "Sinn Fin wants to be in government in both parts of this island because that is a means to fulfil our historic mission to bring about a truly national republic and a truly national government, " he said.

He did not commit his party to taxation increases but said they would tackle the "super rich."

While using the phrase "the war is over, " Adams made the traditional Sinn Fin ardfheis reference to the activities of IRA members. He also sent goodwill wishes to Cuban President, Fidel Castro.
