A SECOND half extra-time point from Down player James McGovern ensured that Queen's were crowned Sigerson Cup champions for the eighth time with a 0-15 to 0-14 win at the Malone playing fields in Belfast yesterday.
This game hung in the balance throughout as the sides were level on six occasions until McGovern's 72nd minute kick ensured the host college were celebrating a hard earned crown.
UUJ had made the better of the opening half of normal time and were three points in front at the interval thanks to good play from Mark Lynch, Raymond Mulgrew, Paddy Cunningham and defender Rory Murray among others.
The second half told a different tale as Queen's fought back with points from Ciaran O'Reilly, Charlie Vernon and Paul McComiskey to level the contest and the sides were level once more until Mark Lynch looked like taking a winner three minutes from the end. However an Eoin McCartan point forced extra-time and QUB took the contest with the only point of extra-time thanks to McGovern's excellent score.
Queen's were resiliant in the closing stages and after the match Antrim's Kevin McGourty took the Ulster Bank man of the match award.
