LYON (0) v ROMA (0) Tuesday, Stade de Gerland, 7.45 Gerard Houllier's idea of colourful football at Liverpool was a red scarf and 10 men punting the ball up to Michael Owen, so when he accuses you of negative tactics, it's time for some self-reflection. Though that jibe may have been part of the increasing bad blood in this tie, Roma did look paralysed by fear in the first leg. But then, if Lyon are the champions in waiting so many claim, they'd have enacted due punishment with an away goal.
Freed of such a threat, Roma will be a different proposition. They won't end Lyon's four-year unbeaten home record, but they don't need to.
Verdict score draw, Roma through on away goals
LIVERPOOL (2) v BARCELONA (1) Tuesday, Anfield, 7.45 Live, RTE Two, 7.00; UTV, 7.30 There's not much going for Barca here. Firstly, it's been 11 seasons since a team came through a Champions League tie after losing the first leg at home. Secondly, it's been 17 since a club actually retained the title. Thirdly, all rationale suggests Rafael Benitez is too meticulous to allow an awaygoal lead slip. But Barca have hinted they've rediscovered the sort of football that de"es rationale.
Whatever happens, this will be tight.
Verdict away win, Barcelona through after extra-time
CHELSEA (1) v PORTO (1) Tuesday, Stamford Bridge, 7.45 You have to feel Porto had their chance. Just 15 minutes into the first leg Chelsea were one down, without John Terry and roaring at each other to keep the shape like a gang of under-14s. But, perhaps having watched too much of the Premiership this year, the Portuguese forgot Andriy Shevchenko's actually not that bad.
Chelsea just about hung on to the initiative, and at Stamford Bridge they're unlikely to let it slip.
Verdict home win, Chelsea through
VALENCIA (2) v INTER (2) Tuesday, Mestalla, 7.45 Inter's record winning streak in Serie A finally ended with a draw against Udinese on Wednesday and their Champions League run should follow. The diminished quality of the Italian game this year always rendered their ascendancy somewhat artificial, and Valencia duly exposed that. Inter will have to press here and, waiting to release David Villa, that will suit the Spanish.
Verdict home win, Valencia through
AC MILAN (0) v CELTIC (0) Wednesday, San Siro, 7.45 Live, Setanta, 7.00 Twelve Champions League away games, one draw, 11 defeats. Says it all for Celtic really. The job had to be done at home but, far from that, they just about lived with Milan.
Could be an uncomfortable night's viewing.
Verdict home win, Milan through
ARSENAL (0) v PSV EINDHOVEN (1) Wednesday, Emirates Stadium, 7. 4 5 Live, Sky Sports 2, 7.30 It's an Arsene Wenger mantra that, in Europe, the tie is always settled in the first leg. He provided plenty of proof last year as Arsenal gained the upper hand in each round on their run to the final, so this is something of an unfamiliar scenario. The threat of an away goal may play on them, but Arsenal seem to have finally learned how to overturn deficits at this stadium. Think Arsene would admit he was wrong?
Verdict home win, Arsenal through
MANCHESTER UNITED (0) v LILLE (1) Wednesday, Old Trafford, 7.45 Live, RTE Two, Sky Sports 1, 7.00 Since Lille travel abroad about as comfortably as a French Top 14 team and referee Eric Braamhaar helped Ryan Giggs effectively kill this tie in the first leg, the only interest is just how nasty this gets.
United to keep their discipline and ease home.
Verdict home win, Manchester United through
BAYERN MUNICH (2) v REAL MADRID (3) Wednesday, Allianz Arena, 7.45 Disheartening to think one of these moribund sides will ostensibly be one of the best eight in Europe. Still, one of Real Madrid's few qualities this year has been keeping scores down, so you feel it will be them.
Verdict draw, Real Madrid through
