HOT SHOTS

ONE TO WATCH "ECLECTIC, I guess if I had to say, " is how Brendan Flaherty describes his work. The Dublin-based artist, who graduated from NCAD in 2005 with a first-class degree, has his first solo exhibition at the Pallas Contemporary Projects. He's only the second emerging Irish artist to feature at PCP's new programme, which offers young artists a space to experiment. The exhibition, 'Magic Drawings in the Living Room', is a vivid affair, taking figures from prehistoric cave painting and inserting them in new scenarios. Definitely a talent to keep a close eye on.

No 111 Grangegorman Rd, Dublin 7; 12pm-7pm; Thursday - Saturday until 21 April.

GREEN LIGHT SPARE a thought for those poor people celebrating Paddy's day somewhere other than Ireland - the green beer, the shameful leprechaun outfits etc etc etc. Not that this doesn't also happen here but there are some seriously good events over the course of the St Patrick's Day Festival that should counterbalance any tweeness.

Catch the cream of Irish comedians at the Comedy Circus, Vicar Street, where David McSavage, Kevin Gildea et al will perform. The always brilliant Skyfest over the Liffey on 18 March promises to be even bigger this year and check out Luminarium at Docklands in the IFSC, an inflatable maze filled with tunnels, slopes and 60 triangular-shaped domes. There's a celebration of Irish music, from trad classics to old TV ads at The 40 Songs of Green in the National Concert Hall on March 15, and March 18 is a day of events and activities throughout the city all through Irish, including museum tours, bingo with Shirley Temple Bar and speed dating. For the full programme, check out www. stpatricksfestival. ie

A BLOOMING GREAT IDEA DOING some good always feels great but when you've got something pretty to show at the end of it, it's even better. Oxfam is asking gardeners of both the expert and enthusiastic amateur varieties to get involved in its Oxfam garden scheme.

All that's required is a garden, seeds and your spare time. Buy a four pack of seeds (Euro1.50 - choices include sweet pea, cornflowers and giant sunflowers) and a seed mat (Euro5.25, with options like a herb garden, wild Irish flowers and a wild flower garden) from Oxfam and get growing.

Alternatively, donate old gardening tools, 9cm pots and six-pack trays to your nearest shop. The funds will help Oxfam Ireland continue its work in Africa. www. oxfamireland. org/oxfamgarden

FETE STUFF FOOD, we're constantly reminded, should be seasonal and we can't think of a nicer way to celebrate spring than tucking into gourmet delicacies at Harvey Nichols Foodmarket in Dundrum. It's practically impossible for anyone with tastebuds to leave the place without buying something, be it a so-hot-it's-lethal chilli sauce or a lump of exquisite cheese.

They're holding a gourmet Spring Fete on Wednesday, 28 March where you get to sample the wares of some interesting suppliers including Martin Millers gin, Kelly's organic cheese, Cocoa Bean chocolates (make sure you try their sea salt version) and Today Was Fun teas.

The evening starts at 6.30pm and includes complimentary food and drink, the tastings and a goodie bag. Call 01 291 0488.

FACE OFF THIS is fun. Register with website www. myheritage. com - it only takes a second - and avail of its free demo Find the Celebrity In You. You will need to upload a picture and you'll be told what celebrity you most resemble. It's not always good though. We know of one person who was Eva Longoria with her contacts in and Bill Gates with her glasses on.

The Sunday Tribune's Charlie Bermingham (right), aged eight months, was less than thrilled to discover he was a ringer for the late Palestinian leader Yassar Arafat. Mind you, there's definitely something about the eyes. . .

TWICE AS NICE WE'LL get the hang of this scented candle thing eventually. It's not enough that you buy good ones (for 'good' read 'expensive') and apparently, any old fragrance won't do. One needs to match different scents to different rooms - tuberose works well in the bedroom. So far, so good.

But now we're cottoning onto the fact that the truly chic homeowner will fragrance-combine, layering different scents to create unusual aromas. Jo Malone's new Scent Surround Pillar Candle combines two of the JM classic scents (Lime Basil & Mandarin and Grapefruit) to wonderful effect. The four candles come on silver engraved base, making it a really lovely gift.

Naturally, being ahead in the scent stakes isn't cheap. It costs Euro422. www. jomalone. co. uk

SOMETHING FISHY THE seafood platter, heaving with crab, prawns, smoked salmon and oysters. The impeccably executed battered plaice and chips. The panoramic view of the Atlantic ocean, with the moonlight rippling on it. Make the trip to Barna, Galway, for O'Grady's on the Pier. Honestly, it doesn't get more delicious, more scenic or more atmospheric than this. Tel: 091 590677. www. ogradysonthepier. com BUY IT THIS WEEK Metallics are massive this season. Source yours at TK Maxx. With over 4,000 brands here, you'll hit the trend without looking exactly like everyone else.

Dress, Euro37; bag, Euro45; pumps, Euro30
