TRIED & TASTED BEETROOT
Jillian Bolger

With its slightly tart taste and vibrant colour, beetroot brightens up any summer salad. Even better, it's very good for you. We go on the jar to find the best beet on the high street.

Aldi Bramwells crinkle cut beetroot 0.99/710g Fresh, clean tasting beets with an appealing, earthy flavour.

Nice bite and not overly acidic. Good value and enjoyed by all tasters.

*****

Chef sliced beetroot 1.16/350g The only noncrinkle cut variety, tasters found this beetroot incredibly acidic, with the malt vinegar overpowering its unique characteristics.

Unusually soft to bite there was not enough flavour to recommend them.

**

Marks & Spencer original recipe crinkle cut beetroot 1.59/280g Unusually, these beets are pickled in sweet vinegar which makes them dreadfully sugary.

Preserved in spirit vinegar, as opposed to the more common malt vinegar, they have an unappetising brown colour. Too soft, too sweet, too ugly.

No stars

Tesco crinkle cut beetroot 0.57/340g Crisp and firm to bite, the malt vinegar adds a pleasant zinginess to the beet without taking over.

The beetroot's natural texture and taste are enhanced making these a good buy.
