INTERCHANGE IS THE BEST WAY FORWARD See Nickey Brennan has wisely set up a committee to look into the area of burnout and particularly encouraging is the makeup of the committee. It has people like DCU's Dr Niall Moyna, Pat Daly and chairman Pat O'Neill who will bring some science to proceedings, and crucially, under-21 dual star Keith Higgins, a staunch defender of the under-21 football championship, which should help counterbalance the views of Pauric Duffy and Leinster secretary Michael Delaney, who advocate scrapping that grade.
Scrap the under-21 grade and while you might lower the chances of some elite talent suffering from burnout, you're only going to increase the numbers of dropout.
Because that's what a lot of fellas at that age, who are still some way off making their senior club or county team, are going to do. And drink. We hear a lot about how the GAA is trying to stem alcohol abuse but scrap the under-21 grade and it's only going to drive more 19 and 20 year-olds to more drink.
One suggestion that O'Neill's committee might consider along with the litany they're bound to receive. Have interchange in all underage and colleges matches, like in International Rules. Right now coaches are reluctant to rest their star underage players even when the game seems in the bag, for fear the opposition might come back. But with interchange, they can sub them out, and if needs be, sub them back in.
Change it up alright, lads.
Interchange.
CHELTENHAM MAKES US THINK OF THE SUMMER Victory for Cork All Star, no joy for Tipperary All Star and a man brazenly parading his Monaghan jersey in the winners' enclosure.
Did the past week at Cheltenham hold any portents for the coming championship season?
On second thoughts, probably not.
