IN THE FRAME WHO said the glory days of Irish filmmaking are over? John Carney's feature, Once, starring the former Frame's bassist Glen Hansard, won the Sundance Film Festival's 2007 Audience Award. This is the first time an Irish film has ever won anything at this important festival and it's due for general release in Ireland on 21 March. In the meantime, go see the exhibition of stills taken by David Cleary, documenting the production of the film both on screen and off in Gallery Number One, Castle Street, Dublin 2. A friend of both Carney and Hansard, Cleary was given free access and the resulting work is an intimate record of a brilliant film shot in 17 days with a skeleton crew.

We're getting marthon-fit with MBTs. Why?
They're giving us much better posture;
muscles we never knew existed are aching and when it's even difficult to pick the trainers up, you know that this can only be for the greater good of your body.
www. swissmasai. co. uk FASHION AT THE FONT ASwell as spiritual events, christenings are also sartorial ones. This is baby's first major occasion facing his or her public. A new website, mybabyrobe. ie has just launched specialising in silk christening suits, dresses and robes. Costing Euro149, they're made to order for your baby, come in a presentation box (with blue or pink tissue paper as appropriate) and are personalised with the name and date of the christening.
Boys can choose from trousers and jackets or romper suits, while girls get pretty dresses with puff sleeves. The robes can be delivered anywhere in the world and if you want to get one as a present for a new mum and dad, you can send a gift card when the baby arrives and parents can choose a robe themselves when the name and date have been decided. Plus, Euro4 from the sale of each robe goes directly to the CT scanner fund in Temple Street Children's University Hospital.
THE SMELL OF ROMANCE CELEBRITY fragrances leave us cold. Even when they're actually rather nice, like Sarah Jessica Parker's perfume, 'Lovely', who wants to buy into another brand extension venture of said famous person. But Danielle Steel is a different matter altogether. The woman's a legend! She's had 99 books published, with 560 million copies sold in the States alone!
She can't possibly need the money or the exposure. Critics hate her; her readers love her and for pure escapism, Steel wins over most other authors hands down.
Highly recommended is The Promise, the story of a beautiful young artist (engaged to a wealthy young man) who is hideously disfigured in a car accident and offered plastic surgery by her fianc's disapproving mother, who promises to pay for the operations provided our heroine pretends to be dead and never contacts her beau again? But we digress.
What does the perfume Danielle smell like? Romance, passion, fate and clichd happy endings. www. daniellesteelbeauty. com LET US EAT CAKE WHEN Annie Bell's appropriately titled, Gorgeous Cakes came out last year, we honestly thought that we would never need to buy another baking book again. But now that master baker Dan Lepard and food writer Richard Whittington have written Exceptional Cakes(these people obviously harbour no doubts as to how wonderful their recipes are), we've had a rethink. While you can certainly eat too much cake, where's the harm in adding another collection of delectable pastries, doughnuts, muffins, meringues and scones to your recipe book compendium just to flick through? The only problem with this theory is that the book's photos and descriptions (eg the lemon tarts pictured - "deliciously rich owning to the generous quantity of butter in the filling") will drive you into a frenzy of baking lust. Out next month.
AVE AVEDA AVEDA is a brand to like and trust.
Bigger picturewise, it's committed to pure ingredients and eco-friendly practices. In terms of the products themselves, they smell amazing and - obviously more relevantly - they work.
So get very exited about its Outer Peace Anti Blemish Relief skincare range, due to hit salons, shops and spas in May. It's an at-home system that promises to give visibly clearer skin to the estimated 56% of teens, 18% of women and 10% of men who suffer from acne.
In testings, 92% of users found a significant improvement in their skin in four weeks. The tamanu nut used in the range is harvested by villagers on Vanuatu Island in the southwest Pacific, who receive proceeds from Aveda for schools and fresh water. www. aveda. co. uk GREEN ACRES DAN and Rebecca Hillman have been trying to live a sustainable lifestyle at their farmhouse, Sally Gardens, near Mohill, Co Leitrim. Now they want to share their wealth of knowledge with others by running workshops throughout 2007. An introduction of rare breed pig-rearing sounds intriguing. But for the less eco-consciously evolved amongst us, a total beginner's guide to growing your own organic vegetables might be a good starting point. www. sallygardens. typepad. com BUY IT THIS WEEK THE ever-reliable Karen Millen label has some very covetable dresses in its spring/summer collection, including a satin shift with bubble sleeves and a graphic sequinned dress.
