Q I want to apply for a position I have seen advertised recently but as I haven't done an interview for years I no longer have an up to date CV. Can you give me some pointers for writing my CV please?
A Your CV is the first impression an employer has of you so make it count.
Your CV must be clear, easy to follow and demonstrate, by the way it's written and presented, the sender's respect for the company to which it's being sent.
Tailor your CV to the specific role you are applying for.
When listing past jobs, give examples of when, where and how you applied the skills and competencies mentioned in the job description.
This illustrates that you can relate your past experience to the job you're applying for.
Your CV should include your personal details, educational history; employment history and additional informationlike hobbies/interests. It should be laid out in reverse chronological order, meaning your most recent job first.
Check not just your CV but also your cover letter for grammatical or spelling errors before sending it but don't over rely on a spellchecker, it can sometimes pass over some crucial spelling mistakes. Make sure to print off your CV and get the person close to you who is most literate and fussy to proof read it. Make sure the letter is addressed to the right person, their name correctly spelled, with the right title at the right address.
