BACK KERRY (-2) TO BEAT DONEGAL IN THE NFL TODAY
15-8 Odds quoted are from Paddy Power
Attractive fare on TG4 this afternoon, with the NFL Division 1 A table-topper live from Letterkenny. Donegal have whetted neutral appetites for the Ulster championship with some barnstorming displays and a 100% league record this year. While impressive, their run is most likely to end today. Their last victory under lights was probably the most surprising, with Tyrone dominated by Brian McIvor's side. That was a distinctly bad day at the office for Mickey Harte's side though, and today's visitors offer a different proposition.
After their customary opening day loss, Kerry have quietly gone about their business, dispatching Cork, Fermanagh and Limerick, all by three points or more. With the cobwebs shaken off, they'll fancy their chances after the long trip north. Kieran Donaghy has served a suspension and will take his place at his ideal position of full-forward, Tomas O Se (right) and Bryan Sheehan are back in the starting 15 and Paul Galvin lurks menacingly on the subs bench having returned from Australia. It's an intimidating line-up, even without the Dr Crokes contingent. It's rare that any side makes it through the league unbeaten. Take 15-8 that the Kingdom have at least a goal to spare this afternoon.
BACK KEN DOHERTY TO WIN THE CHINA OPEN 20-1
Odds quoted are from Betfair Currently sitting at number one in snooker's provisional rankings, backing Kendo for the China Open title this week is more than a patriotic punt. At the joint head of the betting are the ever enigmatic/irritating Ronnie O'Sullivan and the Chinese 19-year-old Ding Junhui. This pair have excited the snooker world after being drawn to play each other in the first round of the World Championships in Shef"eld. Ding has form, winning the China Open two years ago and reaching the semi"nals last time round, but odds of just 5-1 are skinny for a teenager to repeat his 2005 win.
O'Sullivan, at similar odds, is always a longer shot than he should be, and may well take the opportunity for a few extra days' rest before entering The Crucible. Doherty's draw makes him a decent long shot at more than 20-1. He avoids the likes of O'Sullivan, Stephen Hendry, John Higgins and Graeme Dott until the semi-"nals, and having reached that stage last year, he'll fancy his chances of going a step further this time round.
Where the money was. . .
BACK IRELAND TO BEAT PAKISTAN IN THE CRICKET WORLD CUP 24-1 (Betfair)
One of the all-time hindsight bets. If you were drunk enough to have staked on Ireland winning their second group stage match you'd have been a happy punter last Saturday night as Trent Johnston's (right) six saw them win a remarkable match by three wickets. Just a shame that subsequent events have cast such a shadow on what should have been remembered as one of the great days for Irish sport and ludicrous patriotic punts.
