GREAT MOMENTS IN IRISH RUGBY
Compiled by Ciaran Cronin

NUMBER 25 Grand Slam Heroes defect to rugby league After the celebrations of 1948, Ireland regrouped short on numbers. Two of their team, centre Paddy Reid from Limerick and Chris (or Jack as he was sometimes known) Daly, a robust prop from Cobh, had accepted offers to join the Huddersfield Rugby League side. In Reid's case, it was a move of choice and, after a couple of months, he was snapped up by Halifax and was part of the team that lost the 1949 Challenge Cup final to Bradford Northern. Daly, meanwhile, was forced into taking up the offer for the simple reason he was sacked from his job, and couldn't get another, after celebrating a little too long for Ireland's Grand Slam. He too left after just one season, and went on to play for Featherstone Rovers. Like Reid, he also played in a Challenge Cup "nal, a defeat to Workington Town.
