The power of the internet knows no bounds. We read in the Clare Champion this week the tale of a St Munchin's student from Ennis who'll be lining up for the USA in the under19 World Cup, which gets underway in Belfast on 4 April. Liam Og Murphy wasn't afforded the opportunity to impress the Irish selectors so he went onto the internet instead. "I was fairly disappointed I didn't get a trial with the Irish under-19 team, I felt I should have got one, " he told the paper.
"Myself and a friend looked it up and came across this American under-19 website. There was a piece on eligibility and it said if you're looking for trials to make contact. And the coach got back to me and asked if I wanted trials. This was November."
Murphy didn't get over until February because of the Munster Senior Cup but the flanker has now been selected in the 26-man World Cup squad, along with Austin Cella from Newbridge and Sean Treacy from Kings Hospital. Good luck to all three, they deserve it for initiative alone.
