"You watch, Annika Sorenstam is going to come back with a vengeance this year." The recent pronouncement of LPGA Tour commissioner Carolyn Bivens.
Frankly, we didn't know that Sorenstam had gone away.
Perhaps the 36-year-old didn't quite dominate the women's game in 2006 as in the past, but with a major victory at the US Open, five other wins worldwide, and a play-off defeat to Meaghan Francella in this season's first tournament, it's not as if she's caught in a slump or anything.
However, Bivens's bizarre comment is reflected in the LPGA 2007 Media Guide which features pictures of Lorena Ochoa, Julieta Granada, and Seon Hwa Lee on its cover. Not an image anywhere of Sorenstam.
The Swede's remarkable total of 69 LPGA wins and just over $20m in career earnings make her unquestionably the greatest women player of all time. As the bouquets were coming his way in the wake of his win at the WGC Accenture Match Play, Henrik Stenson was quick to remind everyone that he wasn't even Sweden's most famous golfer.
Oh, and by the way, Sorenstam still happens to be world-ranked number one. It seems that Bivens and the LPGA might have forgotten that.
