FORMER Australian swimming great Ian Thorpe tested positive for banned substances in 2006 and international swimming body Fina has appealed for a fresh investigation into that test, a French newspaper has reported.
Thorpe, 24, who has retired from swimming, gave a sample in 2006 that showed abnormally high readings for testosterone and luteinising hormone, according to the report. It said the Australian Sport Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) knew of the results but chose not to proceed because of a lack of evidence. However Fina has reportedly appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport for the case to be reopened.
Swimming Australia spokesman Ian Hanson said Australian officials would hold a meeting to discuss the report.
"We are looking to get together to discuss these claims, to discuss all the facts.
We were only informed a short time ago, " he said.
Fina officials in Melbourne for the world championships would not immediately comment on the report.
Meanwhile, the Dutch coach of Thorpe's biggest rival, Pieter van den Hoogenband, has defended the star.
Jacco Verhaeren said he was disappointed Thorpe's career was being tainted by allegations that could be baseless.
"This is damaging somebody's career without any reason and I think that's the worst about it, " said Verhaeren. "I think there are people to investigate these kinds of things and I think we should first listen to these people before damaging somebody who is an exceptional sportsman and to me a very honest guy and to me he is not under suspicion."
Thorpe won five Olympic gold medals, 11 world titles and set 13 long-course records and 23 overall in his career.
