THE 36 Irish aid agencies which are members of Dochas have urged the government not to close its eyes to corruption but to ensure that Ireland can be a leader in the international fight against bribery and backhanders.
Dochas was responding to a new report in which the OECD slates Ireland's performance in this area.
"The government has made some progress on fighting corruption, but has not put in place the necessary legislation to stop Irish companies engaging in bribery abroad. In other words, Irish businesses could be involved in fuelling corruption in developing countries and get away with it, " said Dochas director Hans Zomer.
