SUZUKI'S Grand Vitara SUV has received a four-star rating for adult occupant protection in the latest Euro NCAP crash safety test programme. It also got a three-star rating for child-occupant protection and a three-star pedestrian rating, becoming only the third small offroader to be awarded three stars, the highest pedestrian rating so far awarded in this category.
A key element in Grand Vitara's success is the 'built-in' ladder frame construction which provides the passenger cell with good rigidity and prevents deformation. Impactabsorbing crush zones also direct impact energy away from the cabin, pedals are designed to minimise foot damage by limiting protrusion into the footwell and there is a headimpact protection structure.
All models come with airbags . . .front, side and curtain for front-seat occupants and curtain airbags for those in the back. Isofix child-seat anchors are standard on the rear seats and the front seatbelts have pretensioners and force limiters.
Pedestrian protection measures include an energy-absorbing front bumper to reduce the possibility of serious leg injuries.
Grand Vitara's passive safety features are backed up by good handling and stability of the permanent four-wheel drive. The chassis sits on a wide track and long wheelbase.
