CAREER DOCTOR

Q My new job is not at all what I signed up for. How do I explain to my boss that I am not happy, without looking like I am not a team-player.

I don't want to go looking for another job just now.

A First thing, be honest with yourself. Why is the job not what you signed up for?

What exactly is it about the job that is making you unhappy? Is it that your interpretation of the job description was inaccurate, or that the job is just different from the job description?

Sit down and identify what the issue or issues are. Then think through why they are issues, how to solve or address them.

Next, you need to discuss how things are going with your boss. Ask them to outline your role as they see it and your objectives.

If your boss doesn't clarify the issues then you should outline your understanding of the situation. Be clear, stay focussed on the issues you prepared and solutions.

Be specific and give examples that show why the job is not what you thought. Make suggestions that will improve matters for both of you. Your aim should be to work things through for mutual benefit.

Present yourself as a positive person, eager to contribute to the company.

Emphasise your strengths and demonstrate how you are going to apply them.

You may need to compromise, but ultimately you both need to be crystal clear on the role.
