Artist John Kingerlee has been living and painting on the Beara Peninsula in west Cork for the last 20 years, but his profile has grown considerably in recent times. Last year, a record for his work was set when one of his paintings sold for $156,000 in Sotheby's and a documentary about his life is due out later this year. His technique is fascinating: layers of paint, sometimes as many as 100, are applied over each other, to resemble the rocky landscape outside his studio window. Widely considered to be one of Europe's most collectable artists, check out 60 pieces of his work firsthand, at a two-week exhibition, opening this Friday at the Kenny Gallery, High Street, Galway.
