September 2006 marked the start of a major public awareness campaign around energy efficiency in Ireland. As Minister for Communications, Marine & Natural Resources, I launched the power of one campaign and thereby invited every individual in this country to join me in making a difference.
I realise it's easy to become overwhelmed when we look at "the big picture". Issues like global warming and fuel shortages can make us all feel powerless. That's where the idea of the power of one comes in. If we all become aware of our own power when it comes to energy efficiency, and use it properly, we can collectively make a big difference to ourselves, to our pockets, and to the environment.
The campaign has been supported with an extensive awareness campaign with TV, press, cinema, outdoor, online and radio advertising, a full public relations programme and a comprehensive website, www. powerofone. ie. The website was launched the same day as the general power of one campaign and has been growing as the campaign expands.
The website offers an abundance of interesting pointers and tips to help individuals become more energy efficient. These tips are for the home, at work and for travel. It explains what the power of one is about and why it is important that everyone makes an effort to be energy efficient each day. The website is also available in Irish and the top ten tips have been translated to Polish and Chinese.
As well as offering energy saving tips there are a host of other features on the site.
Order a free energy saving information pack with loads of tips, information stickers and the 21 day power of one challenge.
Register for power of one updates through email, SMS or post.
Take the power of one interactive energy survey to see how efficient you are.
This survey will give you a score based on your energy habits, depending on such things as how many CFL bulbs are in your home or if you leave electronic appliances on standby.
Enter the power of one competition to win great prizes.
View all of the TV ads from the power of one campaign.
Download power of one screensavers, wallpapers and the campaign ringtone.
The power of one Street, www. powerofonestreet. ie was launched this February.
This initiative involved the selection of eight different families from all over the country to take part in a six-month energy challenge. Every month until September, the selected families will be given a task to reduce their energy usage. They will be monitored over the period and rewarded based on their performance. You can find out more about the families, track their progress and submit your own energy saving stories on the website www. powerofonestreet. ie.
We're talking to Ireland's younger audiences on the power of one bebo site: http: //thepowerof1. bebo. com. Here bebo users can post comments about the power of one campaign, sign up to be a "friend" of the campaign, enter competitions and view the TV ads. The site has been very successful with over 15,000 "beboers" visiting the site to date.
It's simple and nearly effortless to make one change, one day. Becoming aware of turning off lights in unoccupied rooms, switching off the TV instead of leaving it on standby, or simply evaluating your own home's energy usage may lead to major savings. It will also allow you to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem.
Keep visiting the power of one site for loads more information on energy efficiency and to find out what is happening next with the campaign.
