Specialist Irish sniffer dogs threatened with assassination by Asian gangs
Una Mullally

TWO IRISH sniffer dogs are under threat of assassination in Malaysia due to their success at detecting pirate DVDs. Lucky and Flo, both black labradors from Northern Ireland, are the only sniffer dogs in the world who are trained in detecting chemicals and polycarbonates used in the reproduction of pirate DVDs.

The dogs travelled to Malaysia last month for a trial mission codenamed 'Double Trouble' organised by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), a group that investigates DVD piracy on behalf of film companies. Previous to this assignment, the dogs showed their skills at London's Stansted airport and at a demonstration in the MPAA offices in Washington DC.

Sources associated with the massive pirate DVD industry informed Malaysia's ministry of domestic trade and consumer affairs that gangs were looking for the dogs with the intention of assassinating them and that a bounty had been placed on their heads.

The threat followed two raids on pirate DVD rings. So far, Lucky and Flo have sniffed out 1.2 million illegal DVDs.

Lucky and Flo are now at a secure location in Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpar, and the MPAA said it was taking the threat to their lives very seriously. The organisation claims they lose around 1bn a year to Asian movie pirates.
