The Economist magazine agrees with Castro! Cuban dictator Fidel Castro last week denounced US plans to increase ethanol production as 'sinister'. Castro objects to using US corn to feed hungry cars rather than hungry mouths. US ethanol subsidies have helped make 2007 the biggest year for corn-sowing since World War II. But, as the Economist points out, cornbased ethanol is neither cheap nor green - and US trade protectionism keeps cheaper, greener sugar cane ethanol out of the US market. And who is a sugar producer? Cuba.
