Gitano Rolando Villazon/Placido Domingo Virgin Classics (CD/DVD) . . .
'ZARZUELA', a form of Spanish operetta marrying theatre, dance and opera, enjoyed its heyday when it was revived in the mid-19th century but suffered a massive loss of popularity 100 years on. Domingo gave great credence to the genre throughout his career and here directs Mexican tenor Villazon and the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid in a cross- section of "romanzas" from zarzuela in 1900 to 1998 (Jose Mari a Cano's Luna).
Villazon gives suitably exaggerated and overly-impassioned performances throughout but his erratic microphone technique leaves much to be desired.
