AN INDEPENDENT report into the murder of an inmate in Mountjoy Prison is likely to be delayed by at least six months.
The Minister for Justice has received the report by Michael Mellet into the circumstances surrounding Gary Douch's murder on 1 August 2006. Twenty-one-year old Douch was found dead in the cell he was sharing with six other men.
It had been the department's intention to publish the report in full at the earliest opportunity but the Sunday Tribune understands that this will not now happen until October at the earliest because a man has been charged with Douch's murder.
Stephen Egan of 42 Belcamp Crescent in Coolock was charged at Dublin District Court last Tuesday. He was remanded to appear again next week but will not be tried until October and the case could last four weeks.
The Mellet report will not be published until criminal proceedings against Egan are concluded in order to ensure that he gets a fair trial.
Mellet was appointed by the justice minister to examine the killing and has issued a series of recommendations to ensure that it never happens again.
Michael McDowell received this report three weeks ago and has been studying its findings.
The Prison Service has conducted its own internal report into the murder but will not be publishing its findings. A Garda inquiry has also been completed.
When he was charged, 23-year-old Egan said: "It's all in the letter to Mr Keys", referring to a letter he wrote to Detective Garda Kevin Keys from Mountjoy station.
