ALL-expenses paid conference trips for doctors, marketing ploys and indirect advertising are allegedly being used by the pharmaceutical industry to "aggressively" promote the over-prescribing of medications to Irish patients, a yet-to-be-published Oireachtas report is set to claim.
The Sunday Tribune understands that the investigation, currently being drawn up by TDs and senators from the cross-party Oireachtas Health Committee and set to be published in early summer, will examine the growing 'medicalisation' trend in the country's health service.
The trend has led to increasing concerns from both doctors and the public about the level of drugs on offer for illnesses that could be treated without the need for prescription medications.
