Area Spotlight Howth

Despite being a short hop on the train or bus from Dublin city, Howth remains a quaint fishing and yachting port. Popular with tourists and Dublin daytrippers alike, Howth has beautiful cliff walks, coastal drives and great seafood restaurants. And while there's a wide variety of property in the area, some of the most expensive homes in the country can be found in Howth

Where is it?

Howth is about 15km northeast of Dublin city. It was originally an island and is connected to the mainland via a narrow strip of land. Howth Head forms the northerly bound of the crescent of Dublin Bay, corresponding to Killiney Head in the south. Surrounding areas include Sutton, Baldoyle and Portmarnock.

Average house prices:

Property prices vary from about Euro400,000 for a one-bed apartment to Euro12m plus for a large detached home on Ceanchor Road.

Howth has an abundance of high-end properties which sell for several million, particularly if they are detached homes on the coast. More modest three-bed houses and cottages sell for Euro520,000 to Euro670,000.

Type of houses:

You can get everything in Howth from a tiny early-1900s one-bed cottage on Main Street, costing around Euro420,000-plus, to a Victorian mansion on several acres, costing anywhere from Euro5m to Euro12m. Former local-authority houses are also available and cost from about Euro510,000-plus, while contemporary apartments cost from Euro400,000 for a one-bed to Euro1.3m-plus in an upmarket development like Howth Lodge or The Villa.

Best streets to live in:

Any road or street with coastal views, including Ceanchor Road, Asgard Road, Thormanby Road, Claremount Road and Howth Summit are the most sought-after addresses and command top prices at sale.

Two homes are currently selling on Claremount Road, priced at Euro2.65m and Euro3.5m, while a detached house on 1.8-acres on Kitestown Road is on the market for Euro5.5m. Other popular areas where prices are more mid-range include period cottages on St Peter's Terrace, costing around Euro630,000, or terraced houses on Grace O'Malley Road, priced from about Euro520,000.
