SUBARU IMPREZA fans will love the shape of the new model - and the fact that for the first time it will be available as a hatchback as well as a saloon. The hatchback was shown at the New York Motor Show but Europeans will have to wait until the Frankfurt Motor Show in September to see the car in metal.
The radical move by Subaru into the hatchback stakes with this model will open up new sales opportunities as the company will now be able to target markets where VW Golf, BMW 1-Series and Audi A3 are big players.
There are big changes up front also with modern styling, a sweeping bonnet and a wide air intake under the grille. The interior has also been restyled. In the Irish market there will be a choice of a 1.5-litre and 2litre petrol engines. The same fourwheel-drive system that is in the current model will continue to be used. Manual and automatic transmissions will also remain unchanged.
And in another big change for Subaru, the Legacy and Outback are to get diesel engine options for the first time.
