EVERYmake-up artist has a trade tip (or three) up their sleeve, and when you've got a hold of them, you can rule the world. Well, you can't. But you can look a lot better in the morning after four hours sleep, and isn't that information worth getting hold of?
This week, Beauty School compiles a list of tips and tricks to get you looking your best, even when you're feeling at your worst? There's nothing worse than waking up in the morning and finding a massive spot on your face. Whoever came up with the concept that blemishes are an adolescent-only phenomenon was a downright liar. But never fear - there's a simple solution to hand. Simply wet an aspirin tablet and rub over the affected area. The tablet will calm the redness and prevent further inflammation.
Sorted.
When it comes to looking fresh-faced, the eyes are a big give-away. If they're not swollen from lack of sleep, they're giving the game away through dark circles and extra wrinkles. But just three easy steps can leave you looking bright-eyed once more.
First, for redness, pop in some Visine Eye Drops (get some US-bound friend to pick them up). This little bottle should go with you everywhere, as it is the most effective solution for bleary eyes.
Next, get out the haemorrhoid cream. No, it doesn't look pretty in your handbag, and yes, it feels quite wrong, but a dab of Preparation H under your eyes tightens your skin and smoothes away wrinkles quicker than any 80 quid cream on the market.
Finally, I've said it before and I'll say it again. If you haven't tried Pout Eye Wander illuminator (Euro20) for under the eyes then you are missing out in life. This light yellow cream brightens even the most haggard eye areas, and it can be used alone or with a concealer for extra effect.
Top make-up artist Bobbi Brown recommends wetting your fingers before applying foundation. The damp residue allows foundation to spread much more evenly, sit on the skin more naturally and last for a lot longer.
If your cheekbones have been AWOL since, well, the 1980s or so, here is Mac make-up artist Niamh O'Connor tip on how to rediscover them. "Using a large powder brush, sweep a matte bronzer from your mouth to your ears, " she says. "This immediately brings out the contours of your face."
Follow with some blusher on the apples of your cheeks, such as Mac's Sweet William Crme Blush (Euro21).
If you have oily skin that tends to break out when you slap sun screen on it during your holidays, invest this year in an oil-free face cream with a high SPF such as Clinique UV Response Cream (Euro20 for a 50ml bottle). Your skin will stay both clear and protected.
The nail experts at Essie (queen of nail polishes) recommend rubbing the bottle between your hands instead of shaking it before using. "This prevents bubbles from forming and ruining your manicured look, " they say, and they should know. And don't forget to run newly-polished nails under cold water to help them dry quicker. It works maybe 20% of the time, but it's worth a shot.
Okay, no one wants to admit to ever having greasy hair. Obviously I never have (cough, hum). But on the off-chance that your shower is broken / you're late for work / the dog stole your shampoo, here is the best invention in the world for hiding that tell-tale shine: Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder (Euro30 from Peter Marks, nationwide). This amazing spray, available in brown, blonde, red, grey and black, immediately gives hair a matte look, adds volume and provides numerous styling possibilities. Sold.
Finally, drink sixty million gallons of water every day and, not only will you lose weight from dashing to the loo every five minutes, but you'll have glowing skin, shiny hair and great muscle tone. Or is that milk?
