BLACK CAPS OFF TO PROMISING START AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA AT WORLD CUP

New Zealand's bowlers took two quick wickets before exerting a stranglehold on South Africa's batsmen in the big Super 8 match in Grenada yesterday.

Graeme Smith was beaten by four Shane Bond deliveries before skewing a loose drive to be caught low down at cover.

James Franklin also found plenty of movement, jagging a ball back into AB de Villiers' pads to remove him lbw. By the end of the 13th over there had been just one four and one six with a scoring rate below two runs an over.

This left Herschelle Gibbs was under pressure to up the rate as South Africa ground their way to 89-3 with just 20 overs remaining. Jacques Kallis hit a measured 22 before trying to attack Daniel Vettori in his "rst over and paying the price. Gibbs was on 43, with Ashwell Prince providing some stable support.
