Carlow minor footballers caused a major shock when they eliminated defending Leinster champions Meath in a gripping first round Leinster MFC qualifier at Dr Cullen Park yesterday.
With just seven minutes of normal time remaining, Carlow led 2-12 to 1-8 and looked home and hosed. But Meath struck for a late brace of goals from full forward Brian Sheridan, who contributed 2-5 of his side's total.
However, Carlow hung on deservedly for a famous victory which earns them a home meeting with Wexford.
Carlow can be thankful for three second-half saves from goalkeeper Pat Hughes while full back Daniel St Ledger made a double save on his own goal line to keep Carlow's lead intact in those final hectic minutes.
CCARLOW B Murphy, R Lawlor 1-2 each, D Murphy 0-3, 0-2 frees; C Murphy 0-2, J Roberts, G Nolan, D St Ledger (free) 0-1 each) MEATH 3-8 (B Sheridan 2-5, 0-2 frees; D Smith 1-0, J Broderick 0-2, P Kelly 0-1)
