CONVICTED paedophile and defrocked Irish priest Oliver O'Grady is living in Phibsborough on the northside of Dublin, just 100 yards from a primary school. Local residents are so concerned that they posted a notice of alert in their latest residents' association newsletter.
"It's a huge cause for concern that he's living right beside St Peter's primary school.
There should be some restrictions on convicted sex offenders living beside schools. We need changes to the law to protect everyone, " said Kieran Collins, chairperson of the Rathdown Road and District Residents' Association in Phibsborough.
Collins told the Sunday Tribune that a neighbour reported to him that O'Grady had been "ogling" her young children in the street two weeks ago. O'Grady, originally from Limerick, has admitted to molesting over 20 children, including a nine-month old baby while a parish priest in California. He served seven years in prison in the US on counts of abusing two boys and was deported to Ireland in 2000.
Speaking to the Sunday Tribune through his letterbox yesterday, O'Grady would not discuss if he had informed garda of his whereabouts as required by law. O'Grady said to "contact the authorities" in relation to these queries.
When asked further questions, he said he could not speak to a reporter without his solicitor present.
O'Grady is not listed on the Irish sex offenders register as it only came into existence under the Sex Offenders Act 2001. O'Grady returned to Ireland in 2000 and the register does not apply retrospectively, according to the Garda press office.
