PUNCHESTOWN'S ever popular Festival gets underway on Tuesday with the promise of a number of English-trained runners adding spice to a meeting that often provides the opportunity to settle some outstanding Cheltenham scores.
Trainers Nicky Henderson and Ferdy Murphy have made several entries and they are both guaranteed to make their presence felt before the week is out. Their colleague Michael O'Brien is expecting a bold show from In Compliance in Wednesday's Grade 1 Guinness Gold Cup.
Sean Mulryan's gelding will be bidding to overcome a layoff of more than four months and has not been seen out since winning the John Durkan Memorial Chase over this course in December. The opposition is likely to include Beef Or Salmon.
The feature race on the opening day is the Grade 1 vcbet. com Champion Novice Hurdle for which Clopf has been made favourite after his win on the flat at Tipperary.
The Willie Mullins-trained Ebaziya, winner of the Supreme Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham, is second favourite, but he will also feature in Friday's Land Rover Champion Hurdle where his rivals include Aintree winner Wichita Lineman and Aran Concerto.
Henry Daly's impressive Aintree winner Mighty Man holds an engagement in Thursday's three mile Dunboyne Castle Hotel & Spa Stayers Hurdle, for which Al Eile, Brave Inca and Hardy Eustace still hold their ground.
Macs Joy warmed up for a defence of his ACCBank Champion Hurdle crown on Friday with a pipe-opener on the flat at the Curragh and is reported to be "very good in himself." However he will need to be as he is up against John Carr's Champion Hurdle winner Sublimity.
Macs Joy's erstwhile stable-companion, 13 year-old Moscow Flyer, comes out of retirement to run in the charity race.
