TRAINER Jim Bolger is following a time-honoured route by running his French Derby hope Creachadoir in this afternoon's P.W. McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown. The Group 3 contest has proved to be a successful stepping stone to Classic success in the past, with the likes of Sinndar and High Chapparal having captured the 10 furlong contest en route to Epsom Derby glory.
Bolger's colt may have been overhadowed by his stablecompanion Teofilo in the pecking order at Glebe House but his trainer described Creachadoir as "a proper horse" after he landed the 2,000 Guineas Trial at this venue earlier in the month.
The ground conditions were against him when he made his seasonal bow at the Curragh but he showed all the toughness and resilience of the Cuban boxer he was named after in putting those problems behind him to win by three and a half lengths at Leopardstown last time. He can be expected to improve again today.
Bolger envisages Creachadoir having no problems with the Derby trip so his stamina is not in doubt and it will be interesting to see how he fares against Aidan O'Brien's principal hope Macarthur. With the benefit of two outings under his belt already this season, Creachadoir is preferred.
John Oxx has made a good start to the new season and the Aga Khan's Danak is a tentative choice for the listed Heritage Stakes, despite the presence of an English raider in the form of the Mark Johnston-trained Prince Of Light.
Racing also takes place at Cork where Councillor Jack gets the vote in the Kanturk Maiden Hurdle.
