Fionn Carr capped a magnificent season with a game-clinching late try for Blackrock against Bohemians at Stradbrook yesterday. Carr, who finishes the season with 12 tries to his credit, struck his last blow in the corner one minute into injury time to seal a 24-16 win.
Blackrock and Bohemians tussled throughout the match in a see-saw version of the game, but eventually the most entertaining Leinster club of the year produced the goods.
Things looked extremely even in the first half but Bohs went ahead early in the second half.
There was a lull in the game then till a penalty by Carr put the home side ahead. The home side went further ahead with a fine try by out-half Ed Farrell, converted by Carr, who delivered the late final blow himself.
At Temple Hill, in what was a very poor contest, Cork Con defeated Ballymena 24-17, but the northern side made certain of their place in the First Division next season when two late tries saw them grab a valuable bonus point.
The Ulster side shaded the exchanges in a first half that failed to come to life. Richard Lane gave the home side the lead with a penalty after 11 minutes but full-back Chris Smyth had Ballymena in front with a try midway through the half for a 5-3 interval lead.
Constitution made three substitutions at half time and showed a marked improvement in their performances as substitute Tom Ryan and Cronan Healy scored tries, with Lane kicking two penalties and a conversion and Daragh Lyons adding a drop goal for a 24-3 lead.
Ballymena hit back with two tries from Chris Smyth and Ian Caldwell in the final 10 minutes and Craig Woods kicked a conversion to leave seven points between the sides.
Lane was off target with a penalty kick in injury time that would have denied the Ulster side a valuable bonus point.
Meanwhile, in the Under-19 International World Championship, Ireland clinched 9th place with a magnificent 340 win over a disappointing Scottish team at Ravenhill.
Ireland dominated the possession and Scotland never really looked like scoring. Ireland led 12-nil at the half-way stage with an early Kieran Essex try which was followed with a Jamie Smith effort just on half-time which Scott Deasy converted.
In the second half Ireland completely dominated and further tries came from Neil O'Malley Tommy Seymour while Deasy scored a try, a penalty and two conversions.
