Q I've been asked to attend an assessment centre as part an internal interview. Can you tell me what to expect?
A An assessment centre forms part of the interview process and includes a series of different selection methods and tests. They are designed to let you prove to your potential employer that you possess some of the skills and qualities necessary for the role you've applied for. Unlike a one-to-one interview, you're assessed along with a number of other individuals.
Depending on the job in question, most assessment centres will include psychometric, aptitude tests and business activities and tasks.
These exercises are observed by a number of assessors who evaluate you on your competencies and qualities, your potential and how you relate to others.
Exercises include: ; group discussions and team tasks where assessors are looking for interpersonal skills such as influencing, team-working and leadership potential; Role Plays are an opportunity for the assessors to see you 'in action' . . . handling an underperforming staff member, and Interviews or Presentations. So structure your information and communicate your points clearly to the appropriate audience.
Speed and accuracy is of the essence - don't get bogged down on the detail, see the overall themes, and prioritise accordingly. Take each one as it comes but avoid spending too long on each exercise.
