WEEKLEY HARDLY CARES IF HE'S IN OR OUT Boo Weekley banked prize money of just $95,000 in his only previous season on the PGA Tour in 2002, but following his surprise victory at last week's Verizon Heritage at Hilton Head, Weekley's earnings have already jumped to $1.7m.
Not exactly a devotee of tournament golf, Weekley has admitted that watching the game on television puts him to sleep, while he has also said that he hasn't a clue how the FedEx points list works. But he is one of the tour's in-form players.
"I don't keep up with golf, " he says, "I call and they say 'All right, you're in this tournament, ' and I just go and play." In just under a year's time, he won't have to call the event organisers because he will already have his invitation to the Masters.
OCHOA STILL HAS A WAY TO GO FOR HALL OF FAME A recent visitor to World Golf Hall of Fame in St Augustine, Florida, looked sort of familiar to the staff, but at the outset, no one was able to recognise her. The young woman and her companion paid their entrance fees and took the tour of the museum which currently features an exhibit in honour of Gary Player.
It was only afterwards that someone mentioned the visitor had been Lorena Ochoa, last year's LPGA money list winner, and the number two player in the world behind Annika Sorenstam.
DALY JUST DOING THE ROUNDS IN CHINA Whatever appearance money John Daly was being paid for turning up at this week's Asian Open in Shanghai, the organisers are probably wondering if it was worth it.
Daly missed his seventh cut in 10 starts this season with rounds of 79 and 76 at the Tomson Pudong club, the second of which included an embarrassing fourputt at the penultimate hole.
"It didn't really matter, I was out anyway, " he explained. Daly plays next week in the inaugural Pine Valley Beijing Open where the sponsors will be looking for better value for their money.
NOLAN FINDS THE GOING TOUGH ON TOUR After several years in the wilderness, former Walker Cup player and Irish Amateur Open champion, Keith Nolan, battled his way back on to the Nationwide Tour in America.
However, Nolan's results haven't been too impressive this season. Of the six events he has played in to date, he has missed the cut each time. Hopefully, there will be better times ahead for the 34-year-old in his travels out of Knoxville, Tennessee.
