RACKARD NAME BACK IN THE FRAME IN WEXFORD Any Wexford GAA statistician who's reading may be able to help us with the following query. When Jason Rackard came on and hit three points for the county minors against Carlow last Tuesday night, was he the first Rackard to score a provincialchampionship point in 50 years (ie since his grand-uncle Nicky's final season)? Three other Wexford heroes of a more recent vintage are on the current minor management team:
Tom Dempsey, Liam Dunne and Billy Byrne. And their waterboy on Tuesday? The county's head of hurling development, George O'Connor.
CAN WATERFORD STOP THE MUNSTER ROT?
An alarmed Tipperary reader emails us to point out that a Kilkenny victory today will mean that Brian Cody's team have beaten all five top Munster counties in National League finals this century: Cork in 2002, our man's own beloved Premier in 2003, Clare in 2005, Limerick last year and Waterford, if it happens, this afternoon. Munster counties also lost the 2000 and 2004 league finals to Galway.
There's a moral or two there, if only we could think of them.
THERE'S STRENGTH IN NUMBERS, WE RECKON Food for thought. While the worry surrounding the state of hurling away from the top teams go on and on and on, we decided to be constructive and grouped together some suggestions. The first involves the club championships in weaker, neighbouring counties to be merged in order to provide a higher standard.
The other, to regionalise weaker sides in the McCarthy Cup while letting individual counties continue to compete in lower-tiers. Just an idea.
