As predicted in this space last week, the boys from Summerhill College, Sligo, gained an unprecedented 11th Irish Schools' Championship title when they defeated Patrician Academy, Mallow, in Tuesday's "nal in Lucan. It was their seventh matchplay win.
Making it all the more impressive was that their hero Tommy McGowan was taken down by two holes by Ciaran McKenna in the top match. The three necessary points were gained by Tony McDaid, Darragh O'Sullivan and Paul Cox with Mark Rooney earning a half. All the Summerhill lads are members at Strandhill. Indeed, it was a disappointing week for the Patricians from Mallow as they were runners-up in the Strokeplay Championship as well, coming up just four strokes short of the Royal Belfast Academical Institute.
