HAMILTON WINS FIVE FRAMES ON THE TROT TO SEAL LAST-EIGHT PLACE

Anthony Hamilton reached the quarter-finals of the World Championship for the fourth time with a 13-8 victory over Ian McCulloch at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre. The match had been level after both of the first two sessions, but when it resumed yesterday Hamilton rattled off five consecutive frames to beat the man who had ousted title-holder Graeme Dott in the opening round.

And the player nicknamed the 'Sheriff of Pottingham' produced a terri"c of standard of snooker to complete his win, making breaks of 111, 107, 91 and 65 to book a last-eight meeting with Stephen Maguire or Joe Swail.

Elsewhere in the second round Joe Swail kept his hopes alive against Stephen Maguire. The Scot had looked in control when leading 11-5 in the "rst-to-13frame encounter but breaks of 82, 72, 56 and 77 kept the Northern Ireland potter in with a chance of a remarkable comeback as he reduced the de"cit to three.
