Carlow minor footballers staged a commendable second-half comeback to defeat neighbours Wexford by 2-9 to 1-7 and qualify for the Leinster MFC quarter-finals at Dr Cullen Park, Carlow yesterday. The visitors looked to be in a strong position when they led by 1-4 to 0-5 at half time, having played into the wind. The Wexford goal was a well-taken effort on 28 minutes from centre forward Richard Dunne.
Carlow made a fine start to the second half and by the 33rd minute were in front through a pointed free from Denis Murphy and a goal from cornerback Shane Redmond. Wexford's cause was greatly diminished when their centre back Sean O'Corcora received a straight red card on 48 minutes for a late heavy tackle on influential Carlow midfielder Brendan Murphy. Carlow sealed their place in the last eight of the provincial championship with a well-taken goal in the final minute from substitute Jordan Lowry, who was set up splendidly by Cormac Mullins.
