OK it's not even May yet so, though we've had some fine weather, most of us are probably not in the mood for swimwear shopping. But don't get too lackadaisical. As far as the shops are concerned we are almost half-way through the new season, which means if you want to get yourself well togged out in the advance of proper summer, you had better get your shopping skates on now.
Not that you need to panic. In fact you can thank Brigitte Bardot and that iconic St Tropez bikini shoot in And God Created Woman for a swimwear season that is very easy on the eye and so much kinder than the usual teensy bikinis and skimpy '70s one-pieces that have been dominating for far too long. This season, her retro sex kitten big-knickers and pistol bras are one of the biggest inspirations to designers from Chanel to Prada. Now copied by everyone from Penneys to Principles, this vintage look is set to be the key shape of the season, and in all price ranges.
As if in reaction to the flash-the-flesh culture of the recent decade, the movie starlet thing gives women of all shapes the chance to feel sexy again, meaning clever padding and low-cut leg-shapes can be used to conceal and reveal best and worst bits. Pretty jewelled sandals, wicker bags, widebrimmed hats, horn-rimmed sunglasses and head-scarves complete the look.
Another reason not to panic is that two affordable and on-trend collections don't even hit the shops until mid-May. The ones to watch of course are Kylie's '60sinspired range of metallic one-pieces and bikinis for H and M, and Kate Moss's string bikini tops and Obig pants' collection for Topshop. Whether you are 'pear', 'apple' or 'triangle' . . . or just have the good luck to be blessed with a body like Elle MacPherson's . . . this season you don't have to worry about anything because it all looks good.
